Just about everyone knows what a LEGO brick is; the colorful block that comes in various sizes geared to get kids to use their imagination as they create. The LEGO company was started in 1932 by Ole Kirk Kristiansen, but it was in 1958 that the now famous LEGO brick was patented beginning a limitless trip to the many roads of boundless creativity using the simple bricks even into the busy technological age of today.
The first Lego bricks were developed in the 1940’s
In 1949 the first plastic LEGO Automatic Binding Brick in four colors with four and eight studs was born. Packaging created to build specific LEGO play structures came in the 1950’s and by 1958 the LEGO brick was perfected into a more stable product that is what is still being sold and used today.
LEGO fans have grown up to create home decor and furnishings out of the fun bricks.
LEGO bricks have been embraced by all ages, using them to create unique furnishings and even an entire house, inside and out. Imagine a home filled with color and imagination to invite conversation and creativity. Color invites happiness so what would promote happy living more than interesting and functional decor intricately fashioned out of the simplicity of LEGO bricks.
LEGO desk
With about 35,000 LEGO bricks the approximate 120 pound LEGO desk was created by Eric C. Harshbarger. Following a typical size desk the finished dimensions are 60 inches wide by 29.5 inches high and 30 inches deep. The colorful desk is fully functioning with seven drawers and even has a lid on top to open for a hole to accommodate cables to drop through.
LEGO Grandfather Clock
Eric C. Harshbarger steps out of the LEGO box creating life size and fully usable furnishings and mosaic art pieces. The amazing grandfather clock is set to tell time and stands tall in its colorful glory of red bricks with yellow brick accents.
LEGO Lamp
Light up the home with colorful beauty repurposing LEGO bricks into a lamp that not only adds beauty to the decor’s furnishings but also makes its own unique statement as the light shines through the aligned LEGO brickwork.
LEGO Vases
Although the LEGO bricks are square, the vases showcase a curved silhouette that is pleasing to the eye as well as to the decor. Nathan Sawaya continues to wow fans with his amazing works of art created from LEGO bricks as a brick artist.
LEGO House
Imagine stepping inside of a life size LEGO house one fantasized about building as a child. James May made it a reality when he accomplished building a full size, two floor high house out of LEGO bricks inside and out complete with a working shower and toilet in the bathroom.
LEGO Cello
Once the decor is complete add some soothing music playing a musical instrument crafted out of LEGO bricks. Brick artist Nathan Sawaya designed and built an actual sized cello that really plays music. Watch the cool video that takes you through his creative process of building the cello.
Perhaps one of the core reasons that LEGO has survived through generations of fun is that the company continues to stay in the Kristiansen family and is now run by the founders grandchild. LEGO thrives simply by one using their mind to have fun thinking and improvising in order to use their hands to creatively invent and build unique LEGO designs and structures.
