The Interior lighting and lighting fixtures can change an entire look and feel of a room. Everyone has visited a bathroom to find that the lighting is so bad that they want to run from the reflection looking back from the mirror or so dark that you cannot see your face in the mirror at all. A beautifully furnished room can be ruined with bad lighting or an ugly fixture.
Room lighting means more than just having a light on when darkness falls. There are many aspects of lighting to be applied to the décor.
- General lighting creates the overall lamination of the room. This would be the central lighting that would be turned on for a working environment or the center ceiling fixture such as in a dining room or bedroom. General lighting is also known as the ambient light in the room.
- Task lighting is the more concentrated light you need when working; such as under-cabinet lighting in the kitchen, a light over the sink or island, a desk, or reading lamp.
- Accent lighting adds dimension and mood to the décor and is used to augment the total design, just as with any decorative accessory. Lighted molding or columns, or lighting washing the ceiling add beautiful effect. Lighting can also be in different colors to create a special look and ambiance.
Use of these different types of lighting together will add a complete look to the décor.
Begin with the general lighting.
- Hang a beautiful chandelier as a center piece.
- Recessed high hats are great for simple general lighting.
Next add your task lighting.
- In the kitchen you will want under-cabinet lighting.
- Add some pretty pendent fixtures over an island and additional lights over a sink and stove.

Your final lighting touch is the decorative accent light.
- Use a wall sconce to wash a wall.
- Highlight a painting with a picture light.

A wonderful and easy way to make old lighting look new is to transform ordinary recessed lights into hanging pendants.
This looks great when it is over a table or counter. You can buy recessed light conversion kits online and in stores like Lowes. These will makeover your room in an instant on a budget. If you rent, you can easily change back to the original high hat when you move. The height can very easily be adjusted after the pendant is installed. These also reduce the air leaks you have with recessed fixtures and are energy efficient.
Update an old chandelier or sconce; one easy idea is to just simply add or change shades on existing fixtures.
Find pre owned chandeliers and sconces at garage sales or thrift shops. Remove any crystals and bulbs and paint the fixture with high gloss paint in black, white, or your favorite color. Put the chandelier back together and hang. You can also add more personal touches with items like shells, little toys, beads, or buttons. Christmas tree ornaments hangers work well to hang these trimmings. Instead of painting you can wrap old chandeliers with glue and rope for a unique look. Swap crystals with shells and beads.
Remember the lighting should be considered just as important as any of the other room décor. Without the correct lighting shining upon your space you will not have the complete comfort of a pleasing environment.
