With the rough economy and the awareness of curbing excessive waste, people are getting more inventive with decorating their homes. Metro areas are overwhelmed with traffic and crowds. People are very aware of the mixture of fewer funds, pollution, and the importance of using already available resources.
This is the moment of creativity.
The TV show Glee is a big hit and has become an inspiration to people of all ages with the “mash up” song styling. Mash-up has become the hottest number. Fashion and interior design has been taking a cue from the mash-up song craze.
Mashing up textures, fabrics, and styles creates unique and beautiful décor. Adding depth in layers is the hot trend.
- Mixing a contemporary fabric with a traditional piece adds a new interest; bold patterns on an antique chair.
- Suit-up a conventional chair upholstering it with a wool fabric ordinarily used for a man’s suit.
- Cover a lampshade in a fur.
- Mix leather and suede with a raw silk.
- Place an animal print in a traditional room.

- Add jewel trims to window treatments, pillows, and lampshades with huge beads and baubles.
Opposite materials are being used together to create artistic décor.
- Wood and metals make beautiful fireplace surrounds.
- Metal wall art adds a new lift to any wall.
- Use of wall panels with lattice cut outs to show off a mirrored wall behind adds a beautiful dimension to an otherwise boring flat surface.
Instead of tossing reuse; assist in saving the environment with one item at a time.
- Repurpose a steamer trunk as a cocktail table.
- Reclaimwood from an old crate and old plumbing pipes to use to make a new bookcase.

- Recycle old bottles, jewelry, and fabric to be used for lamps and upholstery.
Mash-up the repurposed and renewed décor with a fun traditional sofa upholstered in a contemporary fabric. Center the furnishings on a fur area rug. Place some fun oversized pillows on the floor to be used as an ottoman.
Imagination will carry you to wondrous destinations. Make the décor sing and never be afraid to dance!
