Mural painting tricks: Adorn the abode’s walls

Everyone at some point has admired a beautiful décor embellishing wall mural. Walk through a designer’s showhouse and find a lovely mural to admire. Homeowners often hire professional artists to create these masterpieces.

Even people who do not fancy themselves as artists can create their own mural with some simple tricks.

turn an entire wall into a work of art

Wall murals create focal points on a large wall or add beauty over a fireplace. They can cover a troubled surface.

Paint wall murals with the projector method

  • Using an overhead projector and transparency sheets transfer an image onto the wall to trace. (Remember what the teachers use before computers and smart boards?)

shine an image to trace with an overhead projector
  1. Find an image that you love; such as a poster, a painting, photo, or artwork from a book. You can also design your own image on paper.
  2. Use a copier to copy the black and white image onto a transparency sheet.
  3. Use an overhead projector to project the art copied onto the transparency onto the area you plan to paint. Adjust the projector until the image is the size you want on the wall.
  4. Use a pencil or charcoal to trace the projected image onto the wall.
  5. Use the color copy of the image to paint from. Using acrylic paints follow the coloring in the picture to create your painted mural. Use large brushes for large areas and smaller brushes for more intricate areas.

Paint a wall mural with the drawing grid method

  • This requires no special equipment just a steady hand. Draw square grids on your image. Then draw matching square grids in a larger scale on the wall.

matching grids from picture to wall create a beautiful mural
  1. Draw equal-sized squares on your image to create a grid pattern.
  2. Draw matching a grid on the wall to mirror the image on a larger scale. The image grid and the wall grid should have the same number of squares.
  3. Now it is time to start drawing the image on the wall. Use each square in the grid on the image as a miniature drawing you are copying into the corresponding larger square on the wall. The squares keep the image proportionate as you transfer it to the wall.
  4. You should now be ready to use your acrylic paints to paint.

Make the mural a paint by number project for the family and friends to join in painting

  1. Assign numbers to paint colors.
  2. Number the different sections to correlate with numbers on the original image.
  3. Now give everyone helping a number to paint.
  4. You may want to add some shading or edging to finish your masterpiece.

Everyone has an artist inside of them. Enjoy your artistic creation and take pleasure in the complements. Never be afraid to dance!

  1. Beautiful murals and great tips on how to make it happen in your own home. An artist who’s work looks beautiful on the wall is Audrey Beardsley. Lots of swirling lines and curves, very art nouveau. An artist friend of mine hand-painted it on their living room wall and it looked gorgeous. Great post!
