Create Private Spaces in the Abode; Decorating with Bookcases

The cost of living is very high on these days. Living expenses are going up while the living spaces are getting smaller and more crowded. We have to be creative when turning a studio into a bedroom and living room or a one bedroom space into separate rooms for a parent and child.

To divide a large space into a bedroom area and living space, or for two feuding children who want their own bedroom areas, bookcases are wonderful to use.

IKEA has Expedit bookcases http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/00208646, that are open and finished on both sides. Place the bookcase in the center of the room to divide it. Fill it with books and collectables, or sweaters and jeans for the bedroom, and you have an instant partition wall.

Purchase the IKEA Billy Bookcase, http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/categories/departments/living_room/11683/. This bookcase is very reasonably priced and you have a number of options to create the width and heights you need. Use your imagination and think outside of the box. Purchase some thin plywood or paneling to use to finish on the back. Plywood and paneling comes in 4 foot by 8 foot sheets so, depending on the partition size you require, you might need a couple of sheets and you will have to be prepared to trim them to fit.

Option 1 would be to get 2 or 3 bookcases to create the width of partition you require and then build each of them. Hold the bookcases together, and nail the plywood to their backs, holding them together, in order to create a solid wall. Make sure you nail into the center of the edges of the cases.

Option 2 is to take two bookcases. After you have put each of the cases together, arrange them set apart so that the final width is what you want your partition to be. You will be creating an opening in the center between the cases. Finish the back with the plywood or paneling. From the front it will create a wall in the center of the two bookcases. Finish the center and back off with a wall covering or paint. Finish off the rough edges with molding.

If you are using this in the kids’ space let them join in with the handiwork. You can use blackboard paint so they can have a place to create on.

This is a great way to break up a basement area or a two car garage, so that you can repurpose one side for use other than housing an automobile. Look at this as a challenge. In an apartment situation this is an opportunity to be able to create a temporary wall that you can paint and cover however you desire without the consent of a Landlord.

Be adventurous. Stay optimistic and never be afraid to dance!
