Area Rugs to Enhance Your Abode’s Decor

Area Rugs can put a finishing touch to your Abode décor, but can be costly. Remember the best quality material is wool, followed by nylon. You can read more about the types and materials of yarn and weave in my examiner articles, Flooring for Your Abode, Part Three ‘A’ and Part Three ‘B’. You can find really nice deals on wool rugs at homegoods. Target has some nice nylon rugs. IKEA is always a great spot for unique, cost effective, finds.

Be creative and you can make your own area rug very simply and within a small budget.

Make an area rug out of small cotton throw rag rugs.

Buy small cotton rag rugs inexpensively at stores like K-mart and IKEA. Decide on the finished size you are going to need for your area rug and you will be able to figure out how many to buy. Cut off fringe. Sew the sides and ends together with a whip stitch so they are pieced together like a quilt. You can use a contrasting thread to create a fun look. When you are finished you will have a nice, large, area rug, at a budget price, to fit into your décor.

Make your own area rugs out of tossed remnants or carpet samples.

If you find or have an old large remnant, cut it to the size of the area rug you want. You can add your own detail in the center or side very easily. Cut the shape you want (like a triangle or circle) out of brown craft paper. Turn the remnant over so you can trace your shape onto the back with a marker and then cut it out with a box cutter knife. Take a contrasting piece of carpet and cut your shape. The contrasting piece should fit into your rug like a puzzle piece. Use strapping tape, carpet tape, or duct tape to hold it in place.

You can use carpet samples, which a carpet store is disposing of, to make a quilted area rug. The store might just give you their old samples that they are tossing or you can usually find these for a dollar, or so, each. Piece them in the pattern you like. Use strapping tape, carpet tape, or duct tape, and tape, on the back, perpendicular to the seams smaller pieces of tape (they will look like stitches), followed by a strips of tape along all of the seams.

If you would like to finish the back and sides, use muslin cloth.

Apply a thin coat of glue (barge cement is great) with a paint brush to the entire back. Cut muslin cloth the size of your rug adding an additional six inches to each of the four sides, so that is at least 1 foot longer and wider than your new rug. Lay out the muslin on the rug, smoothing it with your hands so that there are no bubbles or wrinkles in the fabric. Allow it to dry for at least two full days.

When it is fully dry cut the muslin so that you have a 2-inch border on all four sides. Tightly fold the edges of the muslin and use a hot glue gun or barge cement to attach these edges to the four sides of the carpet to create your new binding.

Flip over your new rug and vacuum.

Do not forget to purchase a rug pad for your new rug. Rug padding is extremely important to protect the surface under the rug, prevent slippage, and provide an extra cushion to your rug. The pad will also prolong the life of your rug. Rug pads are normally not expensive to purchase so you should not skip this step.

Your seating area will now look complete and everyone will surely be impressed with your, one-of-a-kind, area rug. Tip toe through your new rug and never be afraid to dance!
