When getting dressed we know that the outfit is not complete without the perfect accessory. Sometimes we are in business mode making sure we are wearing the appropriate shoes. At night we might go with funky necklaces to tie our outfits together. Perhaps it is a dreary day and a bright tie and hanky will bring in some sunshine to your attire. Even on the beach your sunglasses can say a lot about you. Whether you are male or female we all depend on accessories to place the finishing touch to our looks.
Accessories are just as important when decorating the abode. With accessories you can tie your entire décor together. They also provide an easy way to redecorate for different seasons or trends.
There are some rules to keep in mind when choosing accessories.
- Stay within your color palette when transitioning to different rooms. This will add to the flow of the décor.
- Use items that say something about yourself to personalize your look. If you love the beach, gather some interesting shells to display in a glass dish or in a shadowbox to hang on the wall. Books referring to things or places that interest you are pretty stacked on a coffee table; keep it down to a low stack of three (you do not want to look like a hoarder).
- When grouping, group in odd numbers. Think asymmetrical; it keeps the décor unique and comfortable.
- Pillows and throws make beautiful accessories and can easily be changed to redecorate in a flash.
- Artwork on the walls can be reorganized and changed around the year for new looks. Dishes hung on the wall in groupings can be interesting and add dimension. Colorful pocketbooks hung on the wall in a girl’s room will provide fun. - Keep your accessories uncluttered. You do not want it to look like Grandmas and do you really want to spend your days dusting.
- Go with the room when accessorizing. A bowl of fruit is pretty on a kitchen counter. A group of vases or interesting sculpture will look attractive on a coffee table. A basket of towels and soaps works well for the guest bath.

accessories say something about you; change them around for a new mood
- Place an interesting item, like something from your childhood, on a bookcase. This provides a conversation piece as well as a piece of comfort from your past.
If you are in need of finding interesting pieces or pillows and rugs, stores like Homegoods and Tuesday Morning are great places to shop. Spend your weekends combing flea markets and garage sales for those one-of-a-kind items that you could display.
Think outside of the box. Items like Fun antique costume jewelry can be displayed in a shadowbox hanging on the wall.
Shadowbox tables and desks work as great temporary frames to swap out motifs with the seasons or trends.
Accessorizing is a fantastic way to add some trendiness to your décor without committing to a huge purchase. Just as you redecorate for the holidays, think of accessories as a way to redecorate for the different seasons or latest trends. Animal prints are fun but might get tedious. There will be times that the bright colored pillows and rugs get to be too colorful and can easily be changed out with a more muted pallet.
Just as you would get bored wearing the same outfit every day, your abode will get stale without some new fashionable additions and changes once in a while. Keep the excitement in your life and never be afraid to dance!
