It is now crunch time for high school teens and the collegiate set. Time for Finals is here. The high schoolers are faced with SATs, ACTs, an AP tests. Not to mention everyone preparing to apply to college, grad school, med school, and law school.
It is a stressful time. Emotions are at their highest, tensions are rising in anticipation to get the best grade possible. This is also the time that it is necessary to be best organized in order to keep it all together.
Whether it is a room within the home or an area in a dorm room it is necessary to set aside a space that reflects a special emphasis on learning.
Organization is key, so is keeping it fun and lively
- Shelves;whether you have a bookshelf or individual shelving it is important to have a space to keep books neatly arranged.
- Different size boxes; purchase attractive letter boxes and file boxes to keep on the shelves to organize papers, pens, and desk accessories.
- Cover a wall with cork;the cork can be painted a fun color or covered with a fabric. Tack up your notes, calendars, and cute notes and fun art to keep the room lively. Post the greatest accomplishments to inspire like ‘A’ plus papers, poetry, or beautiful art work.
- Hang framed posters; large posters behind glass in frames adorning the wall will add beauty and personality to a room. The glass works great as note boards; use post-it notes to jot down your thoughts and stick them to the glass.
Prominence on the study area is important
- A desk is a must; whether it is tucked into a niche, or next to a bed, it is important to have a space designated just for studying and a place to plug in the laptop.
- Lighting; it is very important to have good lighting. If you share a room make sure you have your own private light that will not be glaring into someone else’s space.
- A comfy space; there are times that studying can be more comfortable away from a desk. Have a comfortable chair or a bean bag to plop down in to read a book or go over paper work. Make sure you have the proper lighting by the comfy seating too. No room for a chair, then get a bed pillow that allows you to sit up and use your bed as a respite spot to study.

a desk space with window seat to relax and catch up on reading
- Space to spread your wings; study time often means working with multiple books and papers. Keep a space on the floor clean and ready for these study crunch times. Have a comfortable carpet or rug to sit on and to spread out to study for the important tests and projects.
Personalize with accessories
- World Traveler; Into traveling or dreaming of traveling, decorate with world maps and pretty globes.
- Chemistry aficionado; Decorate with charts
- Marine Life; Keep a fish tank to relax and inspire.
- Musician; have a music stand set up ready to take a flute break.
- Artist; hang your favorite artists’ prints up to inspire you. Have a space designated to display your art work.
Make the study space inviting by keeping it neat and in order.
- It is important that you neaten up the space after each study time; clean off the desk top, place papers and books in their appointed locations. Prepare yourself for the next study round.
Having things in order and knowing that you will have a great place to get the work completed will result in great grades and accomplishments as well as a good night’s sleep. Keep the grades up, jump into your future with both feet and never be afraid to dance!
