Carpet durability equals material choices that work best for the abode

Tile Flooring is wonderful for it’s cleanability and sleek looks. Laminate and Wood Flooring adds comfort to the abode’s decor. Carpeting provides a soft padding under the feet and provides a material warmth on a chilly day. Carpet is a very popular choice for flooring.

There are many considerations when choosing carpeting.

choosing the carpet material

The first thing you need to consider is the material. There are a few common basic material types: nylon, olefin, P.E.T. Polyester, and wool.

Nylon; most popular carpeting.

  • Very durable and has excellent stain resistance.
  • Usually comes as advanced Nylon 6 or Nylon 6,6 carpeting and is a very good option when considering cost.
  • It will work well just about anywhere.

Olefin; also known as polypropylene.

  • This material is stain resistant, low static, retains color, prevents moisture damage, and can be cleaned using strong chemicals without damaging the carpet.
  • It is not very durable and will mat down so should not be used in high traffic areas.
  • This is a good and very affordable option for rooms with a lot of moisture (such as basements) or especially prone to staining (like a playroom).
  • You would want to get this carpet in a Berber (tight loop).

PET Polyester Carpet

  • Eco friendly, made from recycled PET products, like plastic soda bottles.
  • It is soft to the touch, has built-in stain and moisture resistance, and is colorfast.
  • If maintained these carpets can be very good at a lower cost.
  • You can use this material in a cut pile carpet.
  • Polyester carpeting is not very strong so should not be used in areas with heavier traffic, such as hallways.
  • It is good for lighter use areas, such as a guest room.

Wool Carpeting

wool carpet adds luxury to the decor
  • More expensive than most synthetic fiber carpets.
  • It is considered a luxury carpet.
  • It has the softest, most plush fiber, is flame-resistant, and is one of the only natural Eco-friendly carpet choices.
  • It is very durable, does not crush with a lot of wear, and is very stain resistant with special care.
  • Wool fibers work well as a Saxony, Berber, or twisted frieze.
  • Wool is an excellent choice if it is within your budget.

There are many other less common carpet materials. Material such as acrylic and cotton are unpractical due to wear ability. Leather, linen, and silk are not very sensible to use and can be very costly.
