Decorate the Abode Easily Installing Tile Yourself

The weekend is here, the time of week that folks tackle the home improvement projects to beautify their dwellings. Everyone is on a tight budget these days. As the abode’s age, it is a constant struggle for all to find inventive ways to save money to update our homes.

Many people are discovering their creative side and having fun learning how to do projects themselves.

  • Check out places like Home Depot that offer free do it yourself classes.

It is very satisfying when we accomplish a task and can show off our efforts, plus have the benefit of saving money.

There are two products on the market now that make tiling a countertop or wall a simple project for all.

do-it-yourself tile installation

With both products there is no need for mortar and mixing, with no mess. Tiles can be installed at your own pace and grouting can be done immediately after tiles are installed.

SimpleMat

  • Sold at Home Depot.“SimpleMat replaces traditional thin-set mortar or mastic adhesive. The adhesive retains its bonding strength for extended periods of time, meaning that users have the flexibility to tile onto the mat an hour at a time or over several days and because SimpleMat bonds instantly you can start grouting immediately.” SimpleMat cannot be used in wet areas like shower walls.

Bondera TileMatSet

  • Bondera is very promising. “Add the beauty and value of custom tile to your home by doing it yourself with Bondera. No special tools needed. No more waiting for messy mortar or mastic to dry. Bondera is a double sided, peel and stick adhesive perfect for counter & wall tile. Just peel, stick, grout and you’re ready to enjoy your new tile.”
  • Unlike Simple Mat, Bondera works well in wet areas, like bathrooms and showers, when used with Bondera Seam Tape.
  • “Bondera Tile MatSet is an advanced pressure-sensitive adhesive on a roll that provides an innovative way to install tile, making it faster, easier and cleaner than traditional methods such as mortar or mastic. Bondera is self-adhesive, it repels water, is mold resistant and environmentally friendly. Bondera combines three features into one product: tile adhesive, water resistance, and crack isolation.”

  • “Bondera makes it easy for anyone to add the beauty and durability of tile to kitchen walls, backsplashes and countertops; bathroom walls and countertops; tub and shower surrounds; and other horizontal or vertical interior spaces. Bondera is perfect for tile repairs, decorative columns, niches and detail areas, metal surfaces, mosaics and more.”

Both of these products will allow for tiling over many surfaces such as over drywall, plywood, WonderBoard®, concrete, painted surfaces, metal, Corian®, laminates and even old tile. All surfaces to be tiled should be flat, even and stable with no cracks, peeling, or unstable movement.

SimplyMat and Bondera should not be used on floors, ceilings, fireplaces and exterior applications. Hopefully they will come out with a product to be used on floors as well.

Have fun and be creative. These products can enable you to make your own mosaic work of art easily.

  • Use odd tiles and broken china to create a work of art for a unique backsplash or tabletop.

  1. Can this product be used over mirror? We have moved into an older home and our bedroom is 22×10. The end wall is 10×8 floor to ceiling, wall to wall sheets of mirrir which we are having trouble finding a unique solution to get rid of (or cover up). If you can’t use this product, have you got any ideas that we could apply? I would appreciate any help you cn provide. I love your innovative ideas and your blogs.

  2. Sounds like a great idea. I would call the company up to ask them so you can get the appropriate answer. I would think that it would be fine as long as the mirror is firmly attached to the wall.
