Interior decorating the abode with thrift store finds

No matter where you live or visit there will always be a thrift store or consignment shop. All neighborhoods have them. Upscale locations have great shops often disguised as antique stores. Do not be afraid of stepping inside for a great, and reasonable, find for the décor.

On vacation take a walk and visit local antique and consignment shops. Drive around town on a nice weekend and you will be sure to find someone having a garage or yard sale. Before heading out on your adventure you can check for ads in the local papers or on Craig’s List, and then map out where you will want to go.

scour thrift shops for beautiful treasures

There are many treasures to find.

Vacations can be planned around this shopping experience. Plan a weekend trip visiting a new location a couple of times a year.

  • New England has many quaint towns to visit.
  • Upstate New York can be a great place to uncover golden oldies.

Get a taste of the local flavor. Combine your shopping trip with a ski or beach vacation. New Hope, Pennsylvania has great Bed and Breakfasts to stay in. Visit the wine valleys in California and shop the local towns.

Keep an open mind. Look for deals.

You might see something you like. Do not be afraid to negotiate a price. If you find a piece that needs work you can get a great deal.

  • When you bring it home you can have fun painting it or having it reupholstered.

  • If you are handy and adventurous refinish the wood.
  • Sometimes all you need is to use furniture oil and you will be amazed at what you will find when you remove the dirt.
  • If you choose to paint a piece, use high gloss enamel paint.

As you wander on your journey check out what others might have thrown away.

  • Do not be afraid to take a piece that has been tossed to the curb. As it is said “one man’s garbage may be another man’s treasure”. People are lazy and might throw away an item that can be very easily repaired or repurposed.

Be wary of upholstered items or carpet. Bugs can hide in these objects so you might not want to bring them into your house. If you find a discarded upholstered piece that you absolutely must have, bring it directly to have it overhauled at the upholsterers.

You will be amazed at what people throw out. You can decorate an entire room with your finds.

Thrift Shops and Consignment Stores are usually open daily. Look for a local Salvation Army, or the thrifts shops in the local places of worship. Most areas have these stores and you will be giving back to the community with each purchase. Local Boys and Girls Clubs have annual sales as well. There are many treasures to be found. You can find many interesting items including unique furniture, lighting, art, and accessory pieces.

Enjoy shopping and furnishing your space with your new finds. Meet new people and gather new ideas. Never be afraid to dance!
