The tiki bar dates back to the First World War and has continued to be popular, bringing an island party feel to the décor.

Following World War I, travel became more affordable to the masses. Taking an island getaway vacation became a popular destination and, with it, folks brought back souvenirs to adorn their own abodes. Polynesian and South Seas themes in décor, as well as food and drinks, became the rage.

“Don the Beachcomber” is known to have been the first tiki bar. It was created in Los Angeles by Ernest Gantt (known as Donn Beach) in 1933. Gantt decorated the bar with souvenirs from trips to the tropics. Upon returning from World War II, Gantt opened “Waikiki Beach” in Hawaii. The new bar was located on the beach surrounded by palm trees and adorned with authentic tiki and tropical island artifacts. The bar and furnishings were fashioned from bamboo and decorated with diving masks, spears, and carved idols.

Have an island get away in your own backyard. Bring the beach home to share with family and friends. Take pleasure in the lovely weather. Life is a party that you have an exclusive invite to so get out and enjoy, and never be afraid to dance.

The bedroom should be a room filled with décor to promote tranquility and comfort. It is the place that we can shut out the worries of the outside world. Parents seek peace by closing the door and instructing the family to give them some quiet if only for a few moments. The children’s bedrooms are where they can use their imagination to create an exciting world in which to read, play and study.

Be sure to watch me on the eHow video as an accompaniment to this article!

The bedroom’s décor should mirror the personalities of the people seeking a refuge of comfort.

The bed is the centerpiece of the bedroom. A headboard frames the head of the bed and becomes a major focus for the room’s decor. Instead of purchasing an ordinary headboard that is not unique to your personality create a surround for your pillows that will assist in taking you off to dream land.

Create a custom designer headboard easily by repurposing objects, using fabrics and pain.

  • Old wooden doors or shutters are perfect to repurpose and use behind the bed. Paint them and attach to wall or stand a few vertically on the floor to be used as a headboard.

Bicyclists and motorcycle enthusiasts are loving the warmer weather and sunny days taking their bikes out to feel the wind in their face as they cruise around the lovely scenery. The love of bikes does not have to stop with the mere ride. Bike Furniture Design has taken the love of bike inside to decorate the abode with unique and sustainable furnishings.

Beloved bikes can now have a second life as furniture after their road worthiness is over.

Bike lovers become one with nature as they maneuver the roads and trails appreciating the scenery and learning about the value of saving natural recourses. Bike Furniture Design takes the old bicycles and motorcycles out of the dump and recycles them into beautiful furniture that anyone would love to have adorning the abode.

In their quest to save the Earth by recycling bike parts into furnishings Bike Design Furniture has also taken to repurposing other transportation vehicle parts as well using “train and automobile windows for tabletops, and surplus automotive seat-belt webbing for seating upholstery”.

The furniture designs fit into the decor like artful pieces of sculpture that add beauty and usefulness.

“Working within the vernacular of classic modern furniture design, BFD founder Andy Gregg has continued to refine this comfortable and durable furniture since 1990.”

The Tables are constructed using bicycle rims and topped with choices of glass, acrylic, or steel.

The S-2 Table series

s2bar1_100set

  • “The S-2 Bar series is named after the bomb-proof S-2 rim found on Schwinn bicycle classics such as the Typhoon and other such ‘Middle-weight’ cruisers, and also Sting Rays and Crates.”

Vector TablevectorT2

  • “The Vector side table is made from professional-level bicycle rim sections. It is topped with an option of either smoked or clear glass. It is also available with a metal top in a variety of colors.”

S-6 Bar Tables6bardoubletree06

  • ” The S-6 Bar Table is named after the formidable S-6 rim, which was produced by the Schwinn Bicycle Company and was used on their tank-like and, for many years, ubiquitous Varsity model, among others.”

Chairs and Barstools are crafted using rims, tires, inner tubes and padding saved from death in a dump.

Vector Lounge Chairvector chair

  • “The Vector Series Lounge Chair (LCV) frame is constructed of aluminum bicycle rims. This chair is available with custom padded vinyl cushions in a choice of colors. The rims that serve as arm rests on this chair can be fitted with your favorite mountain bike tires or with inner-tubes only. They can also be fitted with a simple pad. This chair is suitable for outdoor use.”

The Milano Lounge Chairmilano chair milano chair2

  • “It is constructed of chromed steel bicycle rims, and handlebars. It is available with a choice inner-tube upholstery which includes easily replaceable, inflated inner-tubes on the seat and back for user-adjusted cushioning, or with cushions made with a wide choice of fabrics. The rims that serve as arm rests on this chair can be fitted with tires or with heavy-duty inner-tubes.”

Modulusmodukus

  • This beautiful chair is available as a rocker with padding or lounge chair made with “inner-tube upholstery with replaceable, inflated inner-tubes to provide cushioning.”

Stuffed Chair is created specifically using bikes that have been in an unfortunate accident.

“The Stuffed Chair is named for the phenomenon of head-on bicycle collisions which result in a bicycle frame with a compacted dimensional state. That is, they have been ‘stuffed’. When a bike has been “stuffed” it is usually best to replace the damaged frame.”stuffedfish2

  • “The bike frames used in this chair model have often been the victim of this destructive occurrence.” Bike Furniture Design allows folks to save their own beloved bikes after disaster by allowing one to send the bike to them to have Bike Furniture Design craft it into repurposed “stylish comfort” for the decor.

Beautiful loveseats, benches and ottomans are also crafted out of recycled parts into beautiful decor.

The founder of Bike Furniture Design, and primary designer, “Andy Gregg has been influenced by his years spent in bike shops, and on bikes”. Mr. Gregg has taken his love for bikes a step further to save his wheeled friends from being tossed into a dump, turning them into repurposed furnishings. The bike furniture provides for sustainable living with decor to be placed as if a piece of art.

Sustainable decor is created simply by using imagination and pure will. Keep an open mind and never be afraid to dance!

Wine has been traditionally delivered in wooden crates that after the wine bottles are taken out of, they are broken down and tossed into the garbage or used for firewood to be turned into ashes. Instead of sending the crates into oblivion be creative and use the wine boxes to add new excitement for the decor.

Wine crates can be repurposed into new lovely furnishings to dress the abode with.

  • Wine crates are interesting in themselves printed with the wine companies names and logos, they instantly lend a country touch to the abode’s decor.
  • Attach the wine crates to the wall to float as box shelves to be used for everything from displaying books and knickknacks in a living room to dishes and glasses in the kitchen.

Society today is excessive in everything including waste. Designers are now attempting to reduce the waste by recycling objects into beautiful new furnishings. Cardboard has now become a sustainable entity that is saved to remanufacture into brand new decor.

Through a unique technique tossed cardboard is salvaged and turned into extraordinary designs.

Domingo Tótora has created an amazing process that turns ordinary tossed cardboard into new wood like  and stone looking furnishings that are exquisite as well as eco-friendly.Designs_18

By reducing the cardboard to a pulp substance Domingo Tótora has developed a unique material to use to form into decorative furnishings.

“In a certified sustainable process, recycled cardboard is broken up into small pieces and turned into a pulp that serves as the base material for furniture, objects and sculptural pieces that are molded by hand, dried in the sun and finished to perfection. In this beautiful and labor intensive process, the cardboard which originated as wood, essentially is brought back full cycle by taking on a wood-like quality again.”

Beautiful designs that appear to be wood and stone are actually crafted from recycled cardboard.

Domingos Tótora returned to his hometown in Brazil after studying design in Sao Paulo. “The surrounding landscape and his passion for nature serve as the sources of inspiration for his work.” His work is grown out of his “respect of the environment”.

Domingos Tótora’s studio and process is a work of art in themselves.

The finished products created from the process are a tribute to how beauty can be salvaged from garbage in order to assist in living in a sustainable world. Just as a bloom may sprout atop of a mound of garbage, with some inventiveness a beautiful object can be grown out of recycling common waste. It is wonderful that more and more people are looking for ways to sustain the world. Planet Earth is home and in order for it to sustain living beings it is time for Earthlings to give back in order to protect the planet. Discover the sustainability in yourself and never be afraid to dance!

Having a beautifully furnished home to show off is the goal for mostly everyone. Decorating the abode can get costly so redecorating using items that you already own or acquire can be the perfect solution to obtaining a beautiful decor without breaking the budget.

Metal cabinets are versatile and can be used for many applications beyond the office.

Traditionally a metal cabinet is thought of the standard filing or storage furnishing found in the office. These sturdy work horses in the furniture world can be wonderful repurposed for decor in other rooms. Decorate a metal cabinet and it will turn into a beautiful piece of furniture to be used in the bedroom, kitchen, dining room or living room.

  • Turn a metal storage cabinet into an armoire for the bedroom or kitchen.
  • Create a kitchen island by repurposing a metal cabinet.

The challenge of repurposing a metal cabinet for a more decorative furnishing is how to go about dressing it up for the decor.

  • Paint is the simplest solution. Use a primer so that the paint adheres to the metal, then paint using a high gloss enamel in a color to complement the decor.

    homejelly

  • Take paint one step further with a faux technique turning the metal into the look of wood or marble.
  • Use stencils to add a special touch to the metal furnishing.
  • Vinyl decals used for wall decor can also be the perfect way to transform a metal cabinet into beautiful decor.
  • Camouflage the cabinet with a collage of favorite pages from books, magazines or music pages using the decoupage method with glue and a top varnish.

  • Cover the cabinet with wallpaper to turn it into a work of art. Finish it with a coat of polyurethane for wear ability.

  • Duct tape is not just for repair jobs anymore. This wonderful tape comes in an array of colors and designs that can be used to transform and decorate furnishings that are destined for the storage room. Cover a metal cabinet with a snake skin duct tape for a designer piece of furnishing. Color block with a number of bright color stripes to use a metal cabinet as a dresser in the kids room or play room.

No matter how large of an abode one resides in, there is always a need for furnishings to store belongings. Items that you find or may already own can be magically turned into brand new decor that will work for you and look beautiful.
