The abode is a reflection of who the inhabitants are who reside within its walls. Having a perfectly complemented designed home is what one aspires to having. Unfortunately the pocket book can keep one from thinking that they can achieve the furnished abode of their dreams. With a little design knowledge, planning and fun shopping anyone can easily design their own beautiful living space.

Have fun floor planning and think outside of the box when shopping and dressing up the abode.

Floor plans are all about trial and error and balancing the room. Once the plan is in place it is time to have fun shopping for the furnishings that will become part of the family. Shopping can be a fun activity for the entire household. Let everyone add their own personal touch to the home, just make sure that everything coordinates. Keep the decor unique allowing for everything to blend together and flow gracefully.

Enjoy browsing

Do not be afraid to browse the stores as one does when shopping for a new car. Just as when purchasing any item one needs to remember to be confidant and completely happy in their purchases. Stay firm and do not let a sales person intimidate you into purchasing something that you do not like or you know will not fit in your space. This task can be intimidating and confusing when working within a budget and handed so many stores and choices.

Keep calm and turn the shopping excursion into a fun adventure. Take it slow visiting a few stores before making final decisions. Many stores will have samples of swatches of fabric and finishes available for you to bring home to help make your choices; all you need to do is ask.

Pull furnishings away from wallsba-sofas

Furniture should never be placed directly against a wall. Even in a small room a sofa pulled just a few inches away from the wall will make the room more inviting; no one wants to feel as if they are put “up against a wall” literally and figuratively.

Create an inviting environment

A larger room may become overwhelming with one seating area; do not be afraid to create a couple of seating areas in a bigger room. Design so there is a clear path to an exit without one walking directly through the sitting area. Use a desk and chair instead of a console table behind a sofa for dual purpose. Think outside of the box using items such as an interesting bench as a coffee table in a tight area. Old trunks can be fun for tables too. Ottomans with trays, instead of coffee tables, create coziness and extra seating when having guests. Mix shapes. Add a round coffee table for softness.

Hide a play area within a designer room

Having young children in the household does not have to equate with a house looking like a daycare center. Furnishings can have multi uses creating areas for play hidden in plain sight. Add a pretty antique painted children’s rocker which can double as pretty accent. Replace an end table with a lovely wood play table and a couple of child chairs around it for craft time or homework.

Coordinating different woods can create a designer touch

If you have a set in maple buy a piece in walnut to contrast. Be aware that more than two different woods in a room can be overkill. The different woods should not appear too close in color or else it will seem like a design mistake. Do not try to buy a piece to match existing furniture finishes. It might seem like it is a match in the showroom only to see the actual wood is pine stained a cherry color when placed next to the natural cherry furnishings in the room, creating a cheapened look.

blog.purehome.com

blog.purehome.com

Designer rooms do not match, they are coordinated

When buying furniture one does not have to buy the matching sets that appear in groupings in the showroom. A sofa does not need to be identical to a loveseat, just as you do not have to always buy the pants with the matching jacket. Furnishings need to coordinate just as your fashions do. Coordinate fabrics to bring together the seating. Get the touch of a professionally designed room with pieces that are coordinate instead of matching. Purchase one end table and coffee table that match in wood, then find another end table in metal and glass. Use a durable stone coffee table in family rooms removing the threat of wet glass rings as with wood or streaking a glass top. Mix the stone with wood end tables.

Have fun hunting and creating

Shop the bargain stores, thrift shops and consignment shops for unique pieces that will work and add a designer touch to the decor without breaking the bank. Create the look of built in library or china cabinet using units from stores like IKEA. Purchase outdoor furniture after season on sale that can look beautiful used inside; for a kitchen buy a small metal bistro table with two chairs for the breakfast nook. Department store outlets have one of a kind pieces for sale that can become a beautiful bargain when recovered to coordinate with the abode’s decor. Find lovely window treatments shopping online at JC Penney’s clearance section. Target has some amazing buys on upholstered chairs in fun fabrics that look like they were purchased from a much higher end store.

Be open minded and find interesting pieces to dress up the abode with. Enjoy the design adventure and never be afraid to dance.

No matter what size abode you may reside in, the bedroom is the sanctuary to escape away from the daily hustles and bustles of life. The bedroom should be a place to relax and to lock the day’s craziness outside. A large master suite may be your dream but a bungalow sized bedroom can just as easily turn into a special retreat space. The cozier bedroom necessitates the need to be inventive in order to gain the most out of your sleep space. Creativity is the key to decorating a bungalows bedroom.

Enjoy watching me on this eHow video for a tutorial to achieving your own beautiful petite bedroom!

The bedroom’s centerpiece is of course the bed but this is also the object that takes up a large chunk of a small space.

The cozier bedroom necessitates the need to be inventive in order to gain the most out of your sleep space. Creativity is the key to decorating a bungalows bedroom. In planning your bedroom’s new decor there are several options to obtain extra bedroom square footage.

  • Yes loft beds are for adults too. A loft bed is a wonderful solution if you have at least eight foot high ceilings. They create a second story to use as your “bedroom”, opening up an area for storage, desk or seating underneath.Elegant-Adult-Loft-Bed-Plan, thisarchitecture
  • The original Murphy bed is a pull down bed designed to fit into the décor upright and can easily be pulled down for a good night’s sleep. Pull down beds now have desks and sofas built into them so when they are stored upright the bedroom virtually turns into another room.queen with desk

Guest rooms allow for more sleeping options.

  • If the bedroom is to be an extra guest room, bungalow guest bedrooms are a good space to double as an office or den. A sofa bed or futon can serve double duty as seating and a bed for the occasional guest.

If you love the look of a traditional bed for your bungalow then play it up.

Small bedrooms will probably accommodate a bed no larger than squeezing in a queen size. Determine what the storage needs are as well as sleeping needs.

  • For a single, the twin bed can be placed against the wall between two bookcases creating a niche. Add pillows along the wall and there is a place to sit and read when not ready to get under the covers.

    houzz

    houzz

  • A cozy twosome can cuddle on a full size bed. This size bed can be placed against a wall into a corner of the room. Keep in mind that for two it mean that someone has to crawl in from the footboard end. Use a storage headboard that also allows for a shelf behind the bed to provide room for bed lamps and music players.
  • Royal couples need a queen size bed. These beds need room to walk around and will create a very cozy place to nest for couples. Although the standard is to have a couple of feet to get along the side of the bed, allowance can be made for small rooms. Add fluffy pillows to cuddle back on when watching TV or reading.

Keep the decor from being overly busy.

Paint the walls and ceiling in a uniformed look.

  • Most folks believe that they must use white walls to make a room appear larger. Medium shades will create a beautiful backdrop and will not cause one to feel closed in. Use a soft purple, blue, or green to promote a happy sleep. Stay away from bright colors and dark jewel colors. Paint all of the walls and ceiling in the same color so that the room is not chopped up. Trim and doors can be painted in a contrasting color to give the room dimension.IMG_1661

Stay away from heavy window decor.

  • Heavy drapery will close a small room in even more. Use roman shades or blinds for the windows. Shutters work well and create a special look for a bungalow bedroom.

Versatile furnishings and accessories are a must for the cozy bungalow bedroom.

  • Think double duty; storage cubes and benches are perfect as foot boards or in front of the twin bed acting as a settee. Bookcases are not just for books; The narrow shelves take up less room than a dresser. Use the shelves for folded sweaters and pants. Place baskets on the shelves that can discretely store more delicate items.

Loud artwork will keep you awake at night.

  • Keep the art on the bedroom wall personal. Hand happy photos of the family or a piece from a favorite artist. A framed mirror will create a more open feeling as well as help you get dressed.

Depending on the bungalow’s location, you might want to decorate in a theme.

If the home is on the beach then add some lovely accessories and scents to bring the seaside inside.

The country bungalow will be cozy in flannels and wools.

Have a great time viewing me as I discuss great decorating tips in all of my videos on eHow.

For the smaller space, closet organization is very important

Depending on your closet space, there are many options to choose from; hanging or over-the-door shoe racks, belt holders, and hanging shelves are all available.

Enjoy the peace that the bedroom gives to you. Relax in your own cozy oasis. Play your favorite tunes and never be afraid to dance!

The super hero of the home needs his décor as much as the abode’s super heroine. For a woman a posh walk-in closet or a huge master suite and spa bathroom of her own is often an ultimate dream décor, but more times than not, when men are questioned about what their fantasy abode is, they wish for a décor that will emulate a masculine appointed secret haven to escape to.  Whether a single’s pad or a garage, basement, attic, outdoor patio or the corner of a room, any space can be imagined into the décor fitting for a man to get in touch with his super hero identity.real cave, modernmancave

The first step to achieving a perfect man cave is to have a plan in place.

Prepare a floor plan of the room(s) or area that will be set aside for the private cave for the male to call home. With a measuring tape, graph paper, and a pencil one can easily measure and place on paper a scaled layout of the space or spaces that are to be allocated for the man cave. Once the walls are in place the decor can be decided upon and furnishings can be chosen to be positioned perfectly to scale into the drawn space.

Decide on a decor theme that will make up a comfortable dream cave.

Favorite hobbies are an ideal theme for designing the ultimate cave decor in which to call home.  The man cave’s décor should encompass the hero of the home’s hidden secret powers to make the cave a showcase of his dreams.

  • Master chef de cuisine.
  • Graffiti master.
  • To complete the ideal man abode one should choose the furnishings that will perfectly fit the space.

Furnishings are meant to add comfort to the abode’s inhabitants. A list of dream decor items should be easy to come by since they have probably been floating in one’s head every time one drifts off into dream land or buys a lottery ticket.

    • A large flat screen TV.
    • The ultimate audio system.
    • A fully stocked bar.
    • Billiard table.
    • Card table.

In addition to the media surround sound, bar or game tables, other furnishings are necessary to make the space complete for comfort and entertaining the male pals visiting with envy. Furnishings that are easily cleanable should be considered in order to not worry about spillage and instead be able to concentrate on enjoyment.

    Flooring

    • Concrete floors

Floors in basements and garages can be painted with a fun color or pattern in high gloss enamel and a polyurethane top coat. Consider painting the floor in a design that follows the theme of the decor like a baseball diamond or a race track.

    • Tile floors will work well in any room.

Tiles come in arrays of sizes, patterns, materials and colors that can fit any decor theme.

    • Laminate floors can look wonderful.

Make sure laminate flooring is not placed anywhere that moisture may be an issue, such as a basement.

    • Engineered wood.

The engineered manufactured wood creates a rich look and is hardy to work in most locations.

    • Use an area rug to place in the seating area.

Rugs can easily be picked up, cleaned, or replaced when needed. For a garage, roll the rug up when you need to move the car in. Rugs made specifically for the outdoor elements can be left outside for the outdoor decorated man escape space.

Seating and accent pieces. garage, xaxor

Use imagination to create a wonderful decor with seating and decor centered around a favorite theme. Ultra creative souls may want to build their own furnishings or find unique items that have been crafted specifically for special interests making them not only usable furnishings but also wonderful art statements as well.

    • Skateboarders can design a wall or tabletop crafted from tiles by Art of Board that have been made from recycled skateboards.huntvalley
    • Avid bikers and bicyclists can shop at Bike Furniture Design for amazing chairs and tables built from actual parts of bicycles and motorcycles.loveseat07_52wt
    • Car fanciers can find sofas and chairs that are actually designed and built out of recycled car seats and an automobile’s body. Auto wheels and engines can be used as table bases. Build a table yourself by polishing or painting them first and then use glass for the table top. Vehicles can be used to build an interesting bar as well. Tool cabinets are perfect to be repurposed for storage.blog.ucda.ca car bar, ballerhouse
    • Sports fans will enjoy watching a game sitting in an old rescued stadium seat. Chairs and sofas can be made using baseball bats, hockey sticks, or skis for the surround and adding upholstery for comfortable seating.old theater seats, flickr
    • Studious sorts may enjoy a sofa surround or bar crafted from books with books also repurposed to be used as shelves floating on the wall.book desk, cubeme
    • Hair enthusiasts will find that antique barber chairs can make for comfortable seating and old fashioned male gossip.barber chairs, blog.blinds

Comfortable seating pieces come together when using the right upholstery fabric choices.

Leather comes in many colors other than black and also works well when used as a mate with another fabric. Make sure that the leather is not hard and stiff and that you will be able to sink into the seat. Animal skins can be fun for benches or rugs as well. Use an animal hide as a throw on a sofa.

Crypton fabrics are perfect for super hero abodes being impervious to most spills and will last through almost anything. These fabrics are a great choice and come in many patterns and types of fabric including plush chenille.

Fashion fabrics make good choices. When deciding on a fabric one can simply choose a fabric that a man commonly wears, such as wools, tweeds and denim.

Be artistic and think outside of the ordinary by using a Native American woven blanket for upholstery or an interesting rug.

No room to allocate, then decorate a small corner to call one’s own mini cave.

Choose a massage chair that will give one soothing personal attention. Add a privacy screen that when in place everyone understands that you are not to be disturbed. Use an end table with built in hidden refrigerator next to the chair and keep a pair of personal earphones close by to plug in and close out the world around to enjoy a moment of man cave peace.

Whether one lives alone or with a gaggle of family or roommates, most dream of having the perfect decorated space to escape to in their home. Women might tend to opt for the dream shoe closet, but men speak about having their fantasy cave, much like Batman’s cool abode, when questioned about their choice of what their perfectly appointed desired room would be.

Have fun creating the cave of your dreams and never be afraid to dance!

Society today is excessive in everything including waste. Designers are now attempting to reduce the waste by recycling objects into beautiful new furnishings. Cardboard has now become a sustainable entity that is saved to remanufacture into brand new decor.

Through a unique technique tossed cardboard is salvaged and turned into extraordinary designs.

Domingo Tótora has created an amazing process that turns ordinary tossed cardboard into new wood like  and stone looking furnishings that are exquisite as well as eco-friendly.Designs_18

By reducing the cardboard to a pulp substance Domingo Tótora has developed a unique material to use to form into decorative furnishings.

“In a certified sustainable process, recycled cardboard is broken up into small pieces and turned into a pulp that serves as the base material for furniture, objects and sculptural pieces that are molded by hand, dried in the sun and finished to perfection. In this beautiful and labor intensive process, the cardboard which originated as wood, essentially is brought back full cycle by taking on a wood-like quality again.”

Beautiful designs that appear to be wood and stone are actually crafted from recycled cardboard.

Domingos Tótora returned to his hometown in Brazil after studying design in Sao Paulo. “The surrounding landscape and his passion for nature serve as the sources of inspiration for his work.” His work is grown out of his “respect of the environment”.

Domingos Tótora’s studio and process is a work of art in themselves.

The finished products created from the process are a tribute to how beauty can be salvaged from garbage in order to assist in living in a sustainable world. Just as a bloom may sprout atop of a mound of garbage, with some inventiveness a beautiful object can be grown out of recycling common waste. Having a beautifully furnished home to show off is the goal for mostly everyone. Decorating the abode can get costly so redecorating using items that you already own or acquire can be the perfect solution to obtaining a beautiful decor without breaking the budget.

Enjoy watching my fab video discussing ideas to decorate your own metal cabinet!

Metal cabinets are versatile and can be used for many applications beyond the office.

Traditionally a metal cabinet is thought of the standard filing or storage furnishing found in the office. These sturdy work horses in the furniture world can be wonderful repurposed for decor in other rooms. Decorate a metal cabinet and it will turn into a beautiful piece of furniture to be used in the bedroom, kitchen, dining room or living room.

Shabby Chic is a popular style that promotes comfort and coziness. The problem is one should not want the connotation that their abode is shabby. For that reason I now refer to the Shabby Chic style as “Relaxed Chic”

Have fun watching my video discussing fun shabby chic decor

The original Shabby Chic style began in the large homes found on the countryside  in Great Britain.

The country houses in Europe are inviting, decorated with very comfortable furnishings. Perhaps the furniture was handed down from previous generations from their formal city homes after the pieces aged and were replaced.  These furnishings are comfy with a worn and distressed look that is inviting as if saying “sit, relax, You won’t wear me out anymore than I am already”.

Europeans evoke elegance even when shabby.

Maybe it is the accent but the British and French seem to know how to present an elegant appearance even when not attempting to be formal.

Shabby Chic furnishings present a relaxed elegance.

The relaxed decor is lovely with distressed and vintage pieces. Sofas and chairs invite you to rest as if on a fluffy bed. Furnishings range from the elegance of carved French to the simplicity of Swedish and American Shaker.

    • Oversized slip covers often cover sofas and chairs creating an inviting look.

      Art Streiber, Shabby Chic

      Art Streiber, Shabby Chic

    • Many of the furnishings embrace their aged appearance wearing their worn layers of paint proudly.
    • Colors are soft, often in white pallets or soft colors.
    • Patterns are of soft chintz fabrics with country checks, stripes and flowers.

      one kings lane

      one kings lane

    • Fabrics are vintage in appearance faded with age or new to be fashioned to appear as if aged.
    • Wooden furnishings whether actually vintage or new appear to show lives of happy living with distressed edges and worn finishes.

      tripadvisor

      tripadvisor

    • Vintage wood furnishings are often painted in lovely white or light colors of blues and yellows.
    • Weathered metal furnishing add dimension to a room.

Decorating a Relaxed Chic abode can be fun and rewarding.

Imagine yourself in a lovely house on a farm in the country with wide plank wood floors and an old fashioned wood stove. Place yourself inside the dream room that is to be decorated.

First step is to determine your colors

    • Shabby Chic often brings thoughts of white, but light colors in pastel hues work as well. Think about a linen white instead of a bright white. Soft colors such in rose, mint, yellows, greens and blues blend lovely. Even darker patterns will work when distressed into a faded look. Beautiful French toile fabrics are often used inviting scenes of the countryside in the pattern. Traditional floral patterns printed on a linen baric give the relaxed chic look that you are looking for.

You decided on the palette now it is time to determine the furniture that you will need

Obviously different rooms require different furnishings.

    • The living room is the center of the conversation. Make it beautiful with a sofa with an oversized slipcover. Create a conversation area by adding a country French carved frame armchair. Add vintage natural wooden nesting tables to use as an end table. The coffee table can be an aged metal base with a glass or wood top. Prefer the clean look of paint to weathered wood, then create a room using wooden furnishings painted in white, yellow or blue. Use a high gloss enamel for long term wear.

      designlike

      designlike

    •  A country kitchen is the ultimate relaxed chic look. Decorate with a wide planked wood farm table as the centerpiece in the heart of the home. Surround the table with painted ladder back chairs and slip covered cushioned seats. For excitement consider using vintage chairs that do not match and paint them in the same finish. Use the same fabric for cushions or upholstery to tie the furnishings together.

      decorologist

      decorologist

    • The bedroom is in the ultimate of comfort in a relaxed chic decor. Fluffy bedding takes center stage. Shades of whites in cottons, lace and crocheted create a clean and comfortable appearance. Not a fan of white then use a pretty print of roses. Use an antique iron or brass headboard to frame the bed. Add a small chair by the window to sit and read. Vintage finds can be used as bedside tables and dressers. Leave the natural beauty of the aged wood or paint the treasures for a cleaner look.

      homedesignpics

      homedesignpics

Accessories add the finishing touch to the Relaxed Chic abode

    • Bring patterns and textures in with pillows. Tapestries look beautiful on the wall and add a new dimension to the room. Area rugs should have the aged appearance that a needlepoint lends. Add lighting with delicate chandeliers and pretty lampshades.

Make this a great time to have fun discovering new finds at antique stores, thrift shops and garage sales.

    Think outside of the box.

    • Buy the cheap unappealing artwork for the attractive frame then use the frames to frame mirrors or old family photos.
    • Vintage lighting fixtures can be painted.
    • Stools can double as end tables.
    • Old patchwork quilts make lovely throws for the sofa and bed.
