Kitchen cabinetry that is old and out of date can bring the home’s decor down. Purchasing new furniture and appliances can add a bit of freshness to the decor but will not hide the old cabinetry. Cabinetry can be costly to remove and replace; not to mention the mess and down time of not having a kitchen to use.

Enjoy watching me discuss how to update your kitchen on this eHow video

Update the old boring white laminate kitchen.

White laminate cabinetry was popular twenty years ago but now is in need of updating for this century. Use a little elbow grease and imagination and the old cabinetry can be turned into a beautiful new kitchen.

Paint the white laminate.

Laminate can be painted. Preparation is key. Remove hardware and scrub the cabinetry clean. Then sand them well so that the paint will adhere. Make sure to prime the cabinets with an appropriate primer made to use on this material; this is also important for a smooth paint finish that will last. Finally paint the cabinetry turning them into new beautiful decor. A specialty paint supply store should be able to set you up with the necessary materials for the job.

New hardware.

Replace the old pulls and knobs with new attractive handles. This will instantly add newness to the old cabinetry in a quick and easy fashion. The new hardware placed on the newly painted cabinetry will be the icing on the cake for the decor.

Laminate counters can be painted too.

After you have completed transforming the cabinetry do the same with the countertops. Use Rust-Oleum Countertop Transformations™, to turn the existing countertops into a beautiful granite look without the high cost of stone.

Update with a new backsplash.

Add a new tile backsplash to finish off your new kitchen decor. Consider splurging on a few glass accent tiles to really add some special sparkle.

New appliances will complete the decor.

If it is in the budget then complete the new kitchen update by updating the appliances as well. Get good deals in clearance areas where the side of a refrigerator, that will be hidden anyway against your wall, may be scratched.

Do not be surprised by all of the compliments that you receive on your new spectacular kitchen. Little will everyone know that you were able to achieve the new decor without breaking the bank. Entertaining will be a pleasure preparing the affair in your new kitchen.

Take pleasure in updating the decor and never be afraid to dance!

Think beyond the walls and create a new decor painting floors, cabinetry, furniture, and even lampshades and accessories. Even fabric sofas and drapery can be changed into a new appearance with paint. Paint using a single color or multiple colors for a fun look. Use creativity to paint a piece with colors layered or a faux finish.

Faux painting is a wonderful option and is also a perfect way to hide imperfect walls and surfaces.

You can find easy to follow instructions online at sites such as Benjamin Moore, and Valspar Paint to create a beautiful faux finish for your abode. Have fun researching ideas and using your imagination to invent techniques such as using wood glue mixed with paint to achieve a weathered look.

An entire new decor can be fashioned with the many options that faux painting offers:

Start by collecting the supplies needed in order to set up your painting project.

The items needed for a professional looking project to be completed are a drop cloth, rags for cleanup, a cloth and white spirit to pre clean surfaces, light sand paper or sanding block to prepare surfaces for paint, ESP (Easy Surface Preparation) to prepare surface if covering mica, wood filler or putty, putty knife, a screwdriver to remove hardware, primer (light if painting light color or dark for painting darker colors), paint, polyurethane for top coat, paint brush or foam roller (foam rollers are great because they are made to use on surfaces where a very smooth finish is required) and paint thinner for cleanup if using oil based paints.

Beginning your project.

When painting the room’s walls move all furnishings away from the walls. Place drop cloths over furnishings when painting the ceiling. If painting furniture or accessories place them in the center of a drop cloth.

Use an extra bit of attention to details when prepping for painting.

Remove any hardware from cabinetry and furniture.

  • When your project is completely dry you will have the option to put the same hardware back or purchase new hardware to create a totally fresh look. to conserve funds consider painting the existing hardware in a contrasting color for a new appearance.

Clean down the item being painted

  • Use white spirit (if you are not sure what to use ask at your local hardware store) to clean surfaces to be painted.

Sanding is important to prep the surface.

  • Make sure to sand lightly, evenly, and smoothly. You can use a small hand sander if you have one available. For mica surfaces use the ESP instead of sanding to bond the paint.

Fill in any holes and deep scratches.

  • Hole can be smoothed away using wood filler raised to slightly above the surface. Let dry and sand the filler so it is flush with the surface.

Time for fun and excitement, and paint!

There are different types of paint to choose from.

  • Water based acrylic paints are easy to use, dry fast, and clean up with water.
  • High Gloss oil based paints are much more durable and create a smoother more professional finish. A paint thinner will be needed for oil paint cleanup.
  • Paint with primer built in is quick and easy but may not be the best choice for some faux techniques.

Paint on a primer first that is best suited for the type of paint you have decided to use.

The primer is applied first in order to help the paint to adhere. You might want a couple of coats for coverage. After the primer is dry you can add your color.

You will be painting a few coats to achieve your finished product.

Paint in thin coats to prevent drips and make sure to brush up any drips before they dry. Let the paint dry between coats (between coats of oil based paints or primers a paint brush can be stored in a zip lock bag inside of the freezer. The brush could stay there for days without allowing the paint on it to dry). It is important to sand lightly (220 grain) between each coat so the paint will adhere well. Be sure to remove any sanding dust before additional paint is applied. Apply a second coat and a third (if needed).

tlc.howstuffworks

tlc.howstuffworks

For furnishings, cabinetry, counter tops and floors apply a top coat of clear polyurethane to finish the job.IMG_1007

Whether painting your piece in a faux finish or single color paint, finishing with a top coat of clear polyurethane will provide a more resilient finish for your painted furnishing. It is not as necessary to paint polyurethane for walls. Make sure paint is completely dry before placing on any hardware and returning furniture for use. Paint instructions will give the recommended curing time.

Have fun placing the newly painted furnishings in your newly painted abode. Add some great new finds such as new window treatments, pillows, bedding and accessories to enhance the freshly painted rooms and furniture to complete your new redecorated abode. Be proud, you accomplished a great project to literally live in and show off to guests, who are sure to be envious of the beautiful new decor.

Paint a smile on your face and never be afraid to dance!

Just as one likes to redecorate themselves with a new haircut or outfit, people enjoy redecorating the decor to add some new excitement to their lives as well. Changing accessories may help change the decor’s look but after some time looks fade and the abode finds itself in need of a more intense makeover.

Paint can be an economical and easy way to transform the decor into a new look.

Paint comes in endless colors. Custom colors  can be mixed to match any decor your heart desires. The abode is a representation of the people who share the structure and color is the perfect way to reflect the personalities of the those who inhabit the rooms. With a stroke of a brush a boring canvas of a wall can become a brilliant statement.

Transforming a room in paint goes beyond a single color.sweetsanity.typepad

Just as in the fashion world, decorating is about layering to create dimension and excitement. Painting a room should follow this rule as well. Walls, trim, doors, etc. should not be painted in one  solid color. This will just create an unremarkable dull appearance.

When contemplating painting a room, think beyond a single color.

Use at least two colors for painting a room.

  • Trim and doors can be in another color from the walls.

    real simple

    real simple

  • An accent color can easily be added to bring attention to one wall, such as behind a sofa or bed.

    hgtv

    hgtv

  • Faux painting techniques often require a layering of several colors to create beautiful dimension to the surfaces. Faux Finishes are about blending colors and creating special effects, such as marble or wood. Faux painting can be simple to do, as in sponging, or more complex, as in marbleizing.IMG_1018

Use a specialty paint to turn the walls into additional excitement for the decor.

  • Glitter Effect paint is a topcoat that adds a sparkle effect to the surface.
  • Easily hide cracks and patches in older surfaces using Benjamin Moore’s Latex Sand Texture paint in white and then paint over with any color of your choice.
  • Rust-oleum’s magnetic primer painted under a pretty paint color or chalkboard paint will turn the wall into a fun place to post the kid’s artwork.

  • Add the rustic texture of river rocks with a simple brush stroke and paint from Ralph Lauren.

    Ralph Lauren

    Ralph Lauren

Do not forget about choosing the correct paint finish as well.

From a flat to high gloss there is an array of paint finishes to choose from.

  • The best finish for common painting jobs is eggshell or satin.
  • Semi-gloss is traditionally used for bathrooms and kitchens.
  • High gloss paint works well on trim and doors for its cleanability and adds dimension against the walls.

Mistakes happen, don’t worry the walls can always be sanded and primed to make an entire new canvas to be repainted. Bring out your inner artist with creative faux painting. Show off your unique personality with colors and decor. Whether painting a room by yourself or with companions make it a painting party and  never be afraid to dance!

There are some great painting techniques one can do to achieve a fresh look on a budget. Everything can be painted. Walls, cabinetry, furniture, lampshades, accessories, and even fabric can be changed into a new appearance with paint.

With a little patience one can have fun being creative painting and reinventing an old armoire.

  • One piece can be painted a simple color to add a fresh look.
  • The armoire can be a canvas for a painted scene.
  • Use numerous colors for a fun look.
  • Paint a faux finish for an entire new feel.

Painting in one color can add new simple vibrancy to a piece.

Use paint to lighten up a dark wood and then change out the cabinet hardware to finish the new look. You can also use a coat of paint for damaged furniture. Make sure that the wood is sanded smooth and that chips and imperfections are filled in. Paint with a primer and then a high gloss enamel for a solid finish.

Bring out the artist in you by using an armoire door as a canvas to paint a mural.

Painting murals of scenes or flowers will make an armoire pop. There are different techniques to mural painting. You may use your own artwork or bring in a floral print to match upholstery. Use either the grid method or projector method to create an outline of the mural that you are going to paint.

Using a variety of colors will add excitement to an old piece of furniture.

Use a couple of colors to define trim and moldings or create an ombre effect with a few colors fading from dark to light. Steal from the streets and paint the armoire like a graffiti work of art. Paint a color blocked, geometric pattern with a few complementing colors. By using imagination the old armoire will be a work of new colors blossoming.

Faux painting can also be great to hide imperfect surfaces.

Faux Finishes are about blending colors and creating special effects, such as marble. Painting with faux finishes creates a multi-dimensional look to surfaces. There are many options when faux painting:

  • Faux marble
  • Venetian plastering
  • Paints & glazes
  • Color washing
  • Ageing & distressing
  • Wood graining
  • Ragging & stippling
  • Dragging
  • Sponge painting
  • Spatter painting
  • Crackling

Easy to follow instructions for Faux and Decorative Painting Techniques can be found at Benjamin Moore online and Faux Painting Techniques.

Mistakes are part of the adventure. Trial and error is part of the creation. Surfaces can always be sanded and primed to make a new canvas to be freshly painted. Do not be afraid to express yourself with color. Never be afraid to dance!

learn the different ways to use paint to create a beautiful decor!

Photo – Paint your way to a beautiful renewed abode – National interior decorating | Examiner.com.

The dream toy room is the room that magically cleans itself up as if in the movie “Mary Poppins”. Unfortunately it is usually an exhausted parent stubbing their toes on toys scattered about and yelling at overtired kids to clean up after themselves.

Toy room decorating should involve the kids. That way they will take pride in showing it off and hopefully keeping it in order.

The toy room should be more than just for play.

It is also the room that the kids can sit and enjoy a book or watch a movie. Provide comfortable areas to sit that will also work double duty.

  • Use a futon for the kids to crawl up on to read a good book. Futons have covers that can easily be cleaned. They also are perfect for sleepover parties.
  • A toy chest or storage ottoman is perfect in front of the futon to throw the feet onto as the kids watch a movie. Toss the stuffed toys into the storage chest for a neat room.IMG_1282
  • The end table can double as a play table with a couple of child chairs around it for craft time or homework.

For a play room it is key to keep as much open space as possible.

The floor should be as comfortable as the furniture. The kids might want to play or stretch out on the floor to watch a movie. They need room to express themselves and play with the interactive video games.

  • Place soft padding under plush area rugs.
  • Large throw pillows can double as floor cushions for extra seating.apartmenttherapy

The secret to decorating a toy room is to make organizing easy and a fun lesson in play.

Check out my helpful video:

Bookcases and shelving are wonderful to keep bins in to sort out toys, electronics, homework and craft & art supplies. Make this a project to plan with the kids. Have them sort out their objects of delight into the different categories. Find bins in different sizes and materials for every use at stores like IKEA or Container Store to organize the toys and everything else in. The kids can make their own labels to place on the bins to organize the favorite things.

LEGO Storage Bricks; The Container Store sells wonderful giant LEGO Block storage boxes in different sizes that will store more than just LEGOs. Not only do they store toys, art supplies and more, they double as actual functional LEGO blocks that the kids can use to build a prized fort or their own private corner with.LegoStorageBrickXL_x

The walls can create their own play area in the toy room.

Chalkboard paint will turn a wall or walls into a place for everyone to express the graffiti artist inside. The paint is now available in colors beyond black. Not only will the kids have fun drawing out their thoughts in chalk on the walls, the walls can now be the perfect place to leave messages for the kids.benjamine moore

Dry Erase paint turns a wall into one big memo board.

Magnetic primer can turn the walls into one big canvas to hang artwork, prized homework and reward certificates to display. Use the magnetic primer under a favorite paint color or even under chalkboard paint for double fun.

Toy rooms should be a place to play in and have fun but they should also be used as a way to teach the little ones the importance of staying organized. The better organized than the more fun for play and the less time for fighting among the kids and caretakers about cleaning.

Make decorating a learning experience for everyone. Have fun and never be afraid to dance.

With the rough economy hitting most in some way, folks have been forced to place extras on hold. As the struggle to survive continues, people need some enjoyment and newness in their lives to keep going.

This is a wonderful opportunity to decorate the abode with creativity and some designer touches that you can easily do yourself.

Here are some simple interior design secrets to achieve a beautifully decorated home.

Furnishings do not have to match

A bedroom, living room, or dining room should not have all matching pieces. You would not know this by walking into a furniture store but check out a display condo or designer showcase house and you will see that the pieces of furnishings blend together without matching.

  • Instead of a wood table with matching chairs try a mosaic table with an iron base and rattan chairs.
  • Blend different chairs around a table by painting them the same color and upholstering them with the same fabric.

    dailydanny.com

  • Paint old dressers in a bright new color to add some newness to a bedroom.

    designmilk.com

  • Mix a brass headboard with glass night tables and wood dressers.

Accents make a statement

Walls, ceilings, and trim can be adorned in unique ways to add designer excitement to the decor.

  • Keep walls neutral while adding a color or pattern paper to the ceiling.
  • Create an accent wall with a bold color or pattern behind a bed, sofa, or around a fireplace.
  • Do not be afraid to paint the trim in a color.

It is a fallacy that only white will make a room appear larger.

White walls do not necessarily create a larger appearance for a smaller sized room. It can however cause a room to look drab and boring.

  • Paint the walls and ceiling in a color to bring the eyes around the room and up for a larger appearance.
  • Wallpaper can be used on the walls and ceiling as well.

Create a cozy bedroom.

Add a sitting area to your bedroom for a warm designer touch.

  • Place a small chair and ottoman or a chaise in a corner.
  • No room for a chair, then place oversized pillows stacked in a corner.

Furnishings and window coverings do not have to match

Bedding and upholstery should be coordinated with window treatments but should not match.

  • Tiebacks can be fashioned from the same fabric used for pillows.
  • Windows can be kept simple with blinds or plain flowing sheers.

Dress the walls to hide imperfections

Cracks in walls are commonplace with settling and age. There are ways to hide cracks or incorporate them into the decor.

  • Faux paint a wall around the crack by adding a rustic appearance.

    doanedesigns.net

  • Textured paintable wallcovering is inexpensive and turns imperfect walls into brand new visions of loveliness.

Bathrooms look better with less than more

Does the toilet really need to be covered with a rug? Do not buy those matching sets of bathroom rugs; they shout tacky along with the matching accessories and shower curtain.

  • Use a small wool or rag rug to turn the bathroom into an actual designer room.
  • Curtain rods with attractive finials can be used for towel rods.
  • Add a small chandelier for elegance.

Vintage is designer furnishing

New does not have to mean better. Hunt the yard sales, thrift shops, and even the garbage for decorator finds.

  • Designers love to add a bit of uniqueness to a room with a reupholstered vintage chair or sofa.

    Happy Chair

  • Refinish or paint an old table or lamp.

Built-ins present a designer decor

Built-ins are normally custom and expensive. A built-in look can also be achieved on a budget.

  • Use a niche or closet to create a built-in look using standard cabinets or shelving units and molding.

This year color has popped, showing up with blocks of brightness in fashion and furnishings.

Color blocking has become the “it” hot trend.

Piet Mondrian, a Netherland abstract painter born in 1872, is actually the father of the color blocking technique that inspired Yves Saint Laurent.

composition by Piet Mondrian

Mondrian became famous as an artist practicing the principles of Neo-Plasticism. He is best known for painting squares of colors in geometric blocks of primary colors outlined with a thin black line. As he evolved he would play with painting the same color between a few black lines. With his final painting, Boogie Woogie, he removed the black lines completely. This was his last work before passing away in New York City in 1944.

Yves Saint Laurent made color blocking vogue with the fashion of the mod 1960’s.

Yves Saint Laurent

Laurent was greatly influenced by Mondrian’s works, bringing them to life on the runway.

The partridge Family brought it to the masses watching their cool color blocked painted bus on TV from living rooms around the world.

Color blocking is a wonderful tool to use when decorating; there are many options when using the color blocking technique.

Color blocking designs have been reinvented for a new generation.  No longer is color blocking only in the bright primary colors and blacks lines of a Laurent dress or Partridge Family bus.

Monochromatic color blocking is using one color in different hues to decorate a room.

  • Paint an accent wall in a color.

    homysphere

  • Use another hue of the same color in a sofa.
  • Add more hues of the color with accessories.

Contrasting color blocking is using two or more distinct colors.

  • Paint the room in a blue.
  • Add a sofa in a green.
  • Accessorize with individualized colored pillows and/ or drapery, and area rugs in different bold colors.
  • Be adventurous and paint each wall in a different contrasting color.

    newerarepairs

Color blocking patterns add fun with fabrics, art, and murals in contrasting colors ready to decorate.

  • Paint a color blocked wall mural with geometric squares and patterns.

    styleathome

  • Hang a geometric work of art as a centerpiece on the wall.
  • Decorate with pillows and bedding in color blocked patterned fabric.

    wellorder

Color blocking color schemes can be bold using complementary colors or analogous colors.

Complementary colorsare opposites. Look at a color wheel to find opposite colors such as red and green, or blue and orange.

complementary colors, trendir

Analogous colorsare the ones next to each other on the color wheel that blend calmly together.

an analogous colored wall, cootattoo

Be creative using your own style and preferences when decorating using a color blocking technique.

  • If you prefer neutrals then color block using neutral colors like grays, whites, and beiges, instead of bold colors.
  • Do not be afraid to mix a bold color in with neutral colors.
  • Add a metallic gold or bronze to bring color blocking decorating into this century.
  • Do individual rooms in different color block hues; have a yellow hued room next to a blue hued room.

Bring home a few color sample swatches to have fun choosing different colors for your blocking project. Paint is a great way to refresh the décor and a budget-friendly way to redecorate. Add some funky color blocked pillows and new area rug to update the abode’s fashion. Color Blocking is about fun. Bring out your inner artist and have a creative time decorating the living space.

Celebrate the colors around you and never be afraid to dance!
